Excerpt:
Now in its 32nd year, Creative Growth is the world’s
first independent visual arts center for adults with
mental and other disabilities. Today there are dozens
of other arts programs for mentally disabled adults
in the United States and around the world, but Creative
Growth has been uniquely successful in promoting the
work its artists produce.
It was the first such center to have its own

booth at the annual Outsider Art Fair in New York, and
it was on hand again at the 2006 Fair this January.
During the same month the late Judith Scott, whose cocoon-like
fibre sculptures have made her Creative Growth’s most
widely recognised artist, was featured in a three-person
exhibition at Ricco Maresca, a major New York gallery
that has been partnering with Creative Growth since
the early 1990s.
