| At the age of twenty-four, Horacek is institutionalized for schizophrenia after having worked as a gardener. He refuses to communicate with anyone. At times he will answer a question or another, but usually it is beside the point and he turns his head to the side. A visitor once asked him what he liked to draw and he answered "lower right side". From 1979 on he draws regularly. Drawing is his only visible way to connect. His oval faces are divided both horizontally and vertically. Is this his own portrait sectioned into pieces? Each section seems to have a life of its own; a drawing within itself, but the overall result is a whole. This organic puzzle is interspersed with writings and numbers. He often adds his name and birthplace. He refrains from looking at the face he has drawn, and once the work is completed, he throws it away or hides it in a bag. | ||
